York College of Pennsylvania tasked us with updating their homepage layout and site navigation in order to increase performance.
Through user testing we found that visitors were mainly interested in exploring YCP’s available majors and programs, but they were overwhelmed by the number of clickable options competing for their attention. There was also confusion regarding the navigation, as the hamburger menu was getting lost in the upper right hand corner. Multiple users repeatedly scrolled to the footer to click through the links that were listed there rather than using the hamburger menu. Because of this, users got used to bypassing the majority of the page content just to get to the navigation.
We focused on ways to streamline the clickable options on initial load, while also creating defined spaces for important content as the user scrolled down the page.
What was once a cluttered landing page with an overwhelming number of elements vying for attention, became a tool that helped current and potential students quickly find the information they were looking for. By redesigning everything from the header navigation, to incorporating video, to giving each section a significant real estate upgrade, we were able to funnel users to their desired location while modernizing their experience.
